Caring for older people with migrant backgrounds presents unique challenges, such as language barriers, cultural differences, and the complexity of family roles and migration dynamics. Health and social care professionals are tasked with providing quality care while respecting diversity and addressing the specific needs of each individual.
In response to these challenges, the Erasmus+ DI.S.C.O.P.M.B. project has developed an e-learning course designed to equip healthcare professionals with the skills necessary to provide diversity-sensitive care. The course focuses on fostering an intercultural approach, emphasising the importance of understanding different communication styles, family roles, and tackling biases that can impact care delivery. One of the core aspects of the course is encouraging professionals to reflect on their own cultural backgrounds and consider how migration can influence care needs. The course also uses storytelling through video testimonies to build empathy and deeper understanding, helping professionals connect with the experiences of the migrant communities they care for. The course has been validated and tested across multiple countries, providing both practical and theoretical tools that enhance the quality of care for migrant populations.
Dedicated national events were organised by project partners as part of the project, with the participation of various stakeholders and professionals from the care sector, have proven to be valuable opportunities for exchange, sharing, and discussion. These events allowed participants to reflect on the challenges and needs specific to their contexts, fostering dialogue and collaboration to improve care practices and promote a more inclusive approach to diversity-sensitive care. Through these initiatives, the DI.S.C.O.P.M.B. project continues to support professionals in providing inclusive and culturally sensitive care to older people with migrant backgrounds.
